Introduction

  • The ISSB, an organ of the Federal Government of Pakistan under the Armed Forces, conducts assessments/tests for inducting Commissioned Officers into the nation’s Three Armed Services.

  • With centers at Kohat, Gujranwala, Karachi, and Quetta, this institute plays a pivotal role in selecting potential officers for the Armed Forces of Pakistan.

  • Pakistan’s armed forces have garnered substantial esteem on the international stage, notably through their significant contributions to UN peace missions across 46 deployments in 29 countries.

  • Besides; demonstrating their prowess, commitment, and diligence, the armed forces’ teams have achieved remarkable recognition in global competitions, attesting to their battle readiness, commitment and hard-work.

Historical Background

  • Before WWII, there was no defined officer selection system; discretion of commanding officers; selection based on bloodlines and education was order of the day. 
  • After WW-II British establishment “War Office Selection Boards” in 1942 for officer induction in the subcontinent.
  • British India adopted these boards in 1943, replaced by Services Selection Boards in 1945.
  • These old days’ Boards used scientific personality screening, in 2-3 day exams which included both written tests and interviews.
  • Post-war, Boards ensured steady supply of quality candidates, this quality focus gained Royal Army’s trust.
  • On Independence eve in 1947: Pakistan got 3 selection boards; these boards were then merged into Inter Services Selection Board (ISSB) in 1952.
  • Initially Pakistan’s first ISSB started in Lahore, later it was moved to Kohat’s Park Lane hotel.
  • More ISSB centers were later established: Gujranwala -1982, and Malir-Karachi -1987.
  • Quetta center was founded in 1999; it was granted permanent status since Sep 2021.

Guidelines for ISSB

  • Remeber ISSB, seeks alert, motivated candidates capable of excelling in rigorous officer training. The Selection Board values clear thinking, composure under pressure, teamwork, and eagerness to engage. Authenticity is key; avoid recklessness and apathy. Be forthright, avoid superficiality. ISSB also discourages private coaching centers, as their training may limit flexibility of thought of the candidates. Here are some guidelines for the candidates; these guidelines are also mentioned at the official website of ISSB; referred above. 
  • Appearance. It is common proverb; first impression is last impression. Be well dress up and carry yourself with grace and dignity. Reflect personal pride through appearance.
  • Self Confidence. Self confidence will be your most potent trait at ISSB. Foster self-assurance through experience, group activities, and responsibilities.
  • Communication Skills. Besides your confidence; strong Urdu and English skills, clear expression, vocabulary, and grammar are valued; while engaging in debates and discussions, keep this in mind.
  • Academic Ability.
    Acadmics is not only what your marksheets reveal; you ability to apply your knowledge will be tested – must prepare for that.
  • Leadership. If ISSB is to see one thing in its candidates; it will always be Leadershiop abilities. Display your leadership potential; in academics, sports, and extracurricular activities at PMA.
  • Fitness. Outdoor tasks; and obstical course at ISSB is meant to check candiates physical fitness; you are advised to get yourself into FIT shape before reporting for ISSB.
  • Motivation. This is the only profession in the world; where candidates pledge to die. hence for all candidates; genuine, persuasive reasons for joining armed forces are crucial; and will be checked.
  • General Knowledge. Stay informed about global and military affairs. Discuss current events with peers, mentors, and stay updated with reputable news sources.
