Momentum is the powerful force that propels us toward our goals. While starting a new activity requires energy and initiative, once we begin, momentum takes over, making it easier to make positive changes and reach our objectives.
Comparing momentum to steering a car, when stationary, moving the wheel is hard work. Yet, once the car is in motion, steering becomes easy, regardless of the speed.
However, momentum isn’t the only friend on our journey to mastering the slight edge.
The key message is this: Momentum, completion, reflection, and celebration are the four allies of the slight edge.
While momentum pushes us forward, it can be hindered if we don’t finish what we start. Unfinished tasks, like unpaid bills and incomplete projects, can hinder a sense of accomplishment. Overcoming this challenge involves tackling one project at a time, much like a toddler learning to walk.
If completion is a struggle, our third ally, reflection, helps identify areas for improvement. To benefit from reflection, we can keep a daily journal, talk to a like-minded friend, or work with a coach. Asking pointed questions about essential tasks and progress on the path to success enhances the reflection process.
Reflection not only uncovers areas for improvement but also highlights what we’re doing well. This leads to celebration, our fourth ally. Celebrating even small successes is crucial because feeling good about ourselves motivates us to do better. After all, success breeds more success.
