Essentials of Group Discussion

The group discussion (GD) at the Inter Services Selection Board (ISSB) plays an important role in assessment of a candidate. There are few essentials that every candidate must bear in mind, to ensure logical, relevant and impressive performance in GD.

1. Understanding the GD Format

  • Group Size and Time Limit:
    • Typically, the group consists of 6-8 candidates, with a time limit of around 15-20 minutes.
  • Topic Allocation:
    • Topics are either assigned by the assessors or chosen by the group. Be ready to discuss both known and unknown topics.
  • Role of the Moderator:
    • A moderator may guide the discussion or let it flow naturally, so be adaptable to both formats.
