TEST - 9

1.  The ratio between the ages of Wahaj  and Mobeen is 4:5 and that between Mobeen and Ali is 5:6. If sum of the ages of three be 90 years, how old is Mobeen ?

(a)  24 years   (b)  20 years   (c) 30 years       (d) 25 years

Explanation: Wahaj : Mobeen = 4:5

Mobeen : Ali = 5:6

Wahaj : Mobeen : Ali= 4:5:6

Therefore, Mobeen’s age = (5/15) *90=30 years

1.  The ratio between the ages of Wahaj  and Mobeen is 4:5 and that between Mobeen and Ali is 5:6. If sum of the ages of three be 90 years, how old is Mobeen ?

(a)  24 years

(b)  20 years

(c) 30 years

(d) 25 years

Explanation: Wahaj : Mobeen = 4:5

Mobeen : Ali = 5:6

Wahaj : Mobeen : Ali= 4:5:6

Therefore, Mobeen’s age = (5/15) *90=30 years

2. The average age of 30 boys in a class is 15 years. One boy aged 20 years, left the class, but two new boys came in his place whose ages differ by 5 years. If the average age of all the boys now in the class still remains 15 years, the age of the younger newcomer is :

(a)  20 years    (b)  15 years   (c)   10 years     (d)  8 years

Explanation: Let the age of younger boy be x years.

Therefore age of older boy = (x+5) years

Then, total age of 30 boys = 30*15 = 450 years

Total age of 31 boys after two newcomers join = 450 – 20 +x + x +5 = = 435 + 2x

From the question, 435 + 2x = 31 * 15

OR, 2x = 465 – 435; OR, x = 15 years

2. The average age of 30 boys in a class is 15 years. One boy aged 20 years, left the class, but two new boys came in his place whose ages differ by 5 years. If the average age of all the boys now in the class still remains 15 years, the age of the younger newcomer is :

(a)  20 years

(b)  15 years

(c)   10 years

(d)  8 years

Explanation: Let the age of younger boy be x years.

Therefore age of older boy = (x+5) years

Then, total age of 30 boys = 30*15 = 450 years

Total age of 31 boys after two newcomers join = 450 – 20 +x + x +5 = = 435 + 2x

From the question, 435 + 2x = 31 * 15  OR, 2x = 465 – 435, OR , x = 15 years

3. Six years back Momina  was half of that of Rania in age. Four years hence the respective ratio of their ages would be 3:5. How old is Rania at present?

(a) 32 years     (b)  16 years   (c)   40 years     (d) none of these

Explanation: Let the present ages of Momina and Rania be x years and y years respectively.

According to question,

(y – 6) = 2(x – 6)   Or, y – 6 = 2x – 12,   Or, 2x – y = 6   …(i)

Similarly,

(x + 4)/(y + 4) = 3/5,    Or, 5x + 20 = 3y + 12,  Or, 5x – 3y = – 8       … (ii)

From equ (i) and equ (ii),

6x – 3y = 18 AND 5x – 3y = -8

We get, x = 26 years and y = 46

(a) 40 years    (b)  (40 + 2N ) years   (c)  (40 + N ) years    (d) none of these

Explanation: According to question,

P = N + 15

A = N + 25

A – P = (N + 25) – (N + 15) = 10 years

4. Hadiya is 15 years older than Nida and Nida  is 25 years younger than Ammara. Which of the following represents the difference between the ages of Ammara and Hadiya?
