TEST - 2

1. The age of Mohsin, Rameez and Sajid total 47 years. What was the total of their ages three years ago?

(a) 44 years     (b) 38 years     (c) 41 years     (d) 40 years

Let the present ages of Mohsin, Rameez and Sajid be m, r and s respectively.

According to the problem, m + r + s = 47

Three years ago their ages would have been (m-3), (r-3) and (s-3) respectively.

Therefore, the total of their ages 3 years ago = (m-3) + (r-3) + (s-3) = (m + r + s) – 9 = 47 – 9 = 38

2. Sajaad is twice as old as Ghani and four years older than Khalid, Khalid is eight. How old is Ghani?

(a) 2 years     (b) 4 years     (c) 6 years     (d) None of these

Let Ghani’s age be x.

According to the problem, Sajaad is twice as old as Ghani, i.e. Sajaad = 2x.

Also, Sajaad is four years older than Khalid, i.e. Khalid = (2x-4).

Given that Khalid is eight years old, we can solve for x as follows:

2x – 4 = 8 => 2x = 12 => x = 6

Therefore, Ghani’s age is 6 years.

2. Sajaad is twice as old as Ghani and four years older than Khalid, Khalid is eight. How old is Ghani?

4. Three years ago, Raheela was 5 years older than Rizwan. What is the difference between their ages today?

(a) 3 years     (b) 4 years     (c) 5 years     (d) 2 years

Let Raheela’s present age be x and Rizwan’s present age be y.

Three years ago, Raheela’s age was (x-3) and Rizwan’s age was (y-3).

According to the problem, (x-3) = (y-3) + 5 => x = y+5

Therefore, the difference in their ages today (x-y) = 5 years.

4. Three years ago, Raheela was 5 years older than Rizwan. What is the difference between their ages today?

(a) 3 years

(b) 4 years

(c) 5 years

(d) 2 years

Let Raheela’s present age be x and Rizwan’s present age be y.

Three years ago, Raheela’s age was (x-3) and Rizwan’s age was (y-3).

According to the problem, (x-3) = (y-3) + 5 => x = y+5

Therefore, the difference in their ages today (x-y) = 5 years.

5.  A father tells his son, “I was of your present age when you were born”. If the father is 36 now, how old was the boy 5 years back?

(a) 15     (b) 13     (c) 17     (d) 20

Let the age of the son 5 years ago be x.

According to the problem, the father’s current age is 36, which means he was (36-x) years old 5 years ago.

Given that the father’s age was same as his son’s age at that time, we can write:

36-x = x => x = 18/2 = 9

Therefore, the age of the son 5 years ago was 9, which means his current age is 9+5=14 years.

Hence, option (b) is the correct answer.

(d) 20

Let the age of the son 5 years ago be x.

According to the problem, the father’s current age is 36, which means he was (36-x) years old 5 years ago.

Given that the father’s age was same as his son’s age at that time, we can write:

36-x = x => x = 18/2 = 9

Therefore, the age of the son 5 years ago was 9, which means his current age is 9+5=14 years.

Hence, option (b) is the correct answer.

6.  Three years ago, Rania was 8 years younger than Anjum. What is the difference between their ages today?

(a) 3     (b) 5     (c) 6     (d) 8

6.  Three years ago, Rania was 8 years younger than Anjum. What is the difference between their ages today?

(a) 3

(b) 5

(c) 6

(d) 8

7.  Amir is older than Nadeem by 4 years, and Danish is younger than Saleem by 1/4th of Amir. If Danish’s age is 8 years, how many times is Nadeem in age to Saleem’s age?

(a) 3     (b) 2     (c) 1/2     (d) 1/4

7.  Amir is older than Nadeem by 4 years, and Danish is younger than Saleem by 1/4th of Amir. If Danish’s age is 8 years, how many times is Nadeem in age to Saleem’s age?

(a) 3

(b) 2

(c) 1/2

(d) 1/4

8. Father is four times the age of his daughter. If after 5 years, he would be three times of daughter’s age, then further after 5 years, how many times he would be of his daughter’s age?

(a) 1.5 times     (b) 2 times     (c) 2.5 times     (d) 3 times

REASON:  Let the daughter’s age be x and father’s age be 4x. So as per question, 4x + 5 = 3(x + 5). So x = 10.

Hence present age of daughter is 10 years and present age of father is 40 years. So after 5 + 5 = 10 years, daughter age would be 20 years and father’s age would be 50 years. Hence father would be 50/20 = 2.5 times of daughter’s age.

8. Father is four times the age of his daughter. If after 5 years, he would be three times of daughter’s age, then further after 5 years, how many times he would be of his daughter’s age?

(a) 1.5 times

(b) 2 times

(c) 2.5 times

(d) 3 times

REASON:  Let the daughter’s age be x and father’s age be 4x. So as per question, 4x + 5 = 3(x + 5). So x = 10.

Hence present age of daughter is 10 years and present age of father is 40 years. So after 5 + 5 = 10 years, daughter age would be 20 years and father’s age would be 50 years. Hence father would be 50/20 = 2.5 times of daughter’s age.

9. What is Aman’s present age, if after 20 years his age will be 10 times his age 10 years back?

(a) 6.2 years     (b) 7.7 years     (c) 13.3 year     (d) 10 years

REASON :

Let Aman’s present age be x. Aman’s age before 10 years = x – 10).

Aman’s age after 20 years = (x + 20). We are given that, Aman’s age after 20 years (x + 20) is 10 times his age 10 years back (x – 10)

Therefore, (x + 20) = 10 (x – 10). Solving the equation, we get

x + 20 = 10x – 100. 9x = 120, x = 13.3 years

9. What is Aman’s present age, if after 20 years his age will be 10 times his age 10 years back?

(a) 6.2 years

(b) 7.7 years

(c) 13.3 year

(d) 10 years

10. Nisha is 15 years elder to Romi. If 5 years ago, Nisha was 3 times as old as Romi, then find Nisha’s present age.

(a) 32.5 years     (b) 27.5 years     (c) 25 years     (d) 24.9 years

REASON :

Let age of Romi be y. Nisha is 15 years elder than Romi = (y + 15).

So Nisha’s age 5 years ago = (y + 15 – 5). Romi’s age before 5 years = (y – 5).

5 years ago, Nisha is 3 times as old as Romi.

(y + 15 – 5) = 3 (y – 5)

(y + 10) = (3y – 15)

2y = 25 y = 12.5

Romi’s age = 12.5 years

Nisha’s age = (y + 15) = (12.5 + 15) = 27.5 years.

10. Nisha is 15 years elder to Romi. If 5 years ago, Nisha was 3 times as old as Romi, then find Nisha’s present age.

(a) 32.5 years

(b) 27.5 years

(c) 25 years

(d) 24.9 years

2y = 25 y = 12.5

Romi’s age = 12.5 years

Nisha’s age = (y + 15) = (12.5 + 15) = 27.5 years.
