Step-3
Being Proactive is Being Yourself

Second habit is “Be Proactive.” And this relates to the historical question, “Who are YOU.” Imagine this: What makes you who you are? Some say it’s your genes, others think it’s your parents, and some believe it’s where you live. But these ideas mean that your life is controlled by outside forces. Highly effective people see it differently.

They know that we can’t control everything around us, but we can control how we react. This is where the first habit comes in.

Humans are different from animals because we can think about our reactions. Animals usually just do what comes naturally. But when you’re proactive, you can decide how to act, even when things go wrong.

For example, if your picnic gets rained out, you can choose to be upset or focus on having fun with your friends despite the bad weather.

Even in really tough situations, like being in a concentration camp during a war, some people still find a way to stay in control of their reactions. Take Viktor Frankl, a famous psychiatrist. He imagined a better future when he was in the camp, and that helped him survive and become a teacher later.

You can learn to do this too. When you face problems at work or in your personal life, don’t react right away. Take a step back, think about what’s causing the problem, and focus on what you can change for the better.
