The Scope of Research

This book “Good to Great” was written by  Jim Collins. It came out in 2001 and has 320 pages. This book talks about how some companies can go from being just okay to becoming really amazing. (Jim Collins, the author, wrote another book before this one called “Built to Last,” where he explained how great companies stay great). But most companies are not great, so the big question is, “How do they go from being okay to being amazing?” What makes them different from other companies that stay just okay?

To find the answers, Jim Collins and his team studied three groups of American companies for five years:

  • Good-to-great companies: These were companies that used to perform like regular companies but then became amazing, making a lot of money for their investors over 15 years.
  • Direct comparison companies: These were companies that could have been amazing too, but they stayed just okay or even got worse during the same time.
  • Un-sustained comparison companies: These companies became amazing for a little while but then went back to being just okay.

Jim Collins and his team did a lot of research. They read more than 6,000 news articles and talked to 2,000 company bosses. They wanted to figure out what the good-to-great companies did differently so that other companies could learn from them.
