Step-3
Tiny Gains make Huge Difference

General perception is GREATNESS comes with giant steps & huge efforts. Whereas in actual world, success happens when you make lots of small steps in the right direction. Good-to-great companies might seem like they suddenly became amazing, but they didn’t have a big plan or event. Their success was like pushing a heavy wheel (a flywheel) a little bit at a time. These small pushes added up, and when it got fast enough, they had a big breakthrough. By sticking to their simple plan (Hedgehog concept), they kept getting better.

For example, Nucor, a steel company, faced big problems in the past but figured out a way to make steel better and cheaper. Their rivals in steel industry believed; nothing can be done as all external factors were poised against steel industry. But They started with one small mill, got customers, built another mill, and kept going. The CEO realized if they stayed on this path, they could become the best steel company in the US. They relied onto something majority of businessmen won’t even consider; they placed their steel mills in the rural areas. Against the conventional wisdom – as in rural areas there was no chance of getting skilled labour. But NUCOR believed – rural farmers; had the habit of hard-work. Hard-work is something we can’t teach anybody – skills any body can learn. This, small change, made all the difference – they hired FIVE, who worked like TEN, and NUCOR paid them like EIGHT. A win-win for all the stakeholders. It took a long time, but NUCOR reached their goal – They became the biggest name in STEEL-INDUSTRY.

Companies that didn’t do well tried to make big changes and quick fixes. When those didn’t work, they got discouraged and tried something new. They didn’t give their wheel a chance to go fast.
