Eternal planning and seeking perfection is the problem – mindset. Being a small company gives you the power to make fast decisions without being caught up in too much paperwork. Instead of saying, ‘Let’s think about it,’ start saying, ‘Let’s make a decision.’ You don’t need a perfect solution; good enough is okay, and you can always keep moving forward.
Avoid spending too much time thinking and planning. Trying to guess the future is like trying to predict with a crystal ball. When you stick too closely to your plans and don’t leave room for changes, you lose the ability to be flexible, which can be risky.
Just go with the flow. Make decisions as you go along, especially those that affect you in the short term, not a year from now. It’s easier to make smaller, reversible choices rather than big, life-changing ones that come with long-term worries.
And don’t make big guesses like, ‘This project will cost $1 million over a year.’ Instead, break your estimates into smaller chunks, like weeks, for more accuracy. If you’re wrong, the impact will be smaller. Lastly, don’t be scared by what could go wrong when making a decision. There are usually possible downsides, but you can deal with them if they actually happen (most won’t).
