Jonah Goldberg wrote “Suicide of the West” in 2018. This is a 484 page book, all about how the good things that made America special are turning into bad things today. He thinks that America used to be seen as really great, but now it’s seen as a force for bad stuff in the world. He doesn’t agree with the idea that history has a perfect ending, like some people (Karl Marx, Francis Fukuyama, and other thinkers) say – “End of Political History“. He thinks that even though liberal democracy is the best system for freedom, it might not always win. Goldberg worries that America is forgetting how exceptional it is, and that’s causing big problems. He believes that capitalism and liberal democracy were like a miracle that made life better for people by creating wealth and peace. But now, because of fighting between political groups and some presidents like Trump and Obama, America might be losing its exceptional status.

This amazing experience started in late 17th century England, something amazing happened. They made things better for everyone by using smart, fair rules. It made life better and stopped a lot of violence. It was like a magic trick that made things awesome. America took this idea and ran with it, becoming a great country because it cared about people’s rights. But now, these good things are at risk because people are fighting about who they are and where they come from. Some are turning away from the rules that made things great. So, what can we do? Maybe the first step is to remember what made the West special in the first place.
