Our minds operate using varying amounts of energy depending on the task at hand. When little energy is needed, and we don’t have to focus much, we are in a state of cognitive ease. However, when our minds need to mobilize attention and use more energy, we enter a state of cognitive strain. These shifts in our brain’s energy levels have a significant impact on our behavior. In a state of cognitive ease, our intuitive System-1 (Quick Decisions) takes charge, and our logical and more energy-demanding System 2 becomes weaker. This makes us more intuitive, creative, and generally happier, but it also increases the likelihood of making mistakes.
Conversely, in a state of cognitive strain, our awareness is heightened, and System-2 becomes more dominant. System-2 is more inclined to double-check our judgments, leading to fewer mistakes, even though we may be less creative. You can consciously influence the mind’s energy usage to prepare for specific tasks. For instance, to make a message more persuasive, promoting cognitive ease is beneficial.
One way to achieve this is by exposing ourselves to repetitive and memorable information. Repeated exposure to clear and consistent messages has a positive impact on our minds, putting us in a state of cognitive ease. On the other hand, cognitive strain is helpful for tasks like solving statistical problems.
We can induce cognitive strain by exposing ourselves to confusing information, such as content presented in hard-to-read formats. This makes our minds become more alert and energetic as they work to comprehend the information, making us less likely to give up.

By exposing ourselves to confusing information, such as content presented in hard-to-read formats.
Because they influence our behavior and decision-making, and knowing how to leverage them can be beneficial.
– Cognitive strain can help us persevere by making our minds more alert and energetic in the face of challenges.
