In George Orwell’s book “The Road to Wigan Pier,” the author found that some people in England supported socialism not because they cared about miners’ difficult lives but because they hated the rich. Today, similar feelings exist about male-dominated leadership known as the patriarchy. This means some people strongly dislike men in powerful positions.
One person who contributed to this dislike of the patriarchy is Max Horkheimer, who believed in “critical theory.” He thought that education and intellectualism should focus on making society better by challenging and breaking down powerful leaders, often males. Some humanities courses also encourage dismantling our macho culture.
The problem is that this approach focuses on destruction, not solutions. It leads to anger towards male behavior, even if it’s not always fair. For instance, male students are sometimes accused of being part of the patriarchy, which is like assuming they’re all bad. While some men have done wrong things, the author argues that men also use their natural aggressiveness in positive ways, like healthy competition, exploring new things, and making progress.
He compares this to skateboarders who show fearlessness and a willingness to take risks. However, some places ban skateboarding. So, the eleventh rule is: don’t stop young people from skateboarding. Rules should protect us, but they shouldn’t suppress our good qualities.
When men are stripped of their masculinity, problems can arise. For example, the story in Fight Club shows that repressed aggression can turn into something dangerous. Emasculation can also lead to right-wing politics becoming more popular. In truth, women don’t want boys to grow up without learning and becoming independent. Every boy has a mom who wants them to grow into responsible adults.
